Blog #4: Rethinking the Revolution

1. The Revolutionary War was actually America's longest declared war and lasted over 8 year. 1 man for every 4 were killed in the Continental Army compared to the Civil War where 1 in every 5 men died.

2. The camera was available by 1861, allowing historians to record the human drama and carnage. This made the Civil War the first modern war.

3. Painting or drawings portrayed the Revolutionary War as glorious and bloodless, as there are no images of bloodied or dismembered bodies. This hides the real truth about the war.

4.The first televised war was Vietnam. The reporters and news networks showed the harsh reality of war. This included the brutal killing and violence of the war. At the same time however cast war was an everyday occurrence and people could turn off their television if they wanted to.

5. The estimated population of America during the Revolutionary War was about 2.5 million and of those 30,000 who fought, died. The equivalent number to today based on a population of 300 million is about 3 million perishing.

The Vietnam War has many parallels to the Revolutionary War. It is also discussed in the text relating to other American wars.
