LAD/Blog #7: Washington's Proclamation of Neutrality

The Proclamation of Neutrality written in 1793 by George Washington. It addressed the foreign policy of the United States. It stated that the United States would take a stance of neutrality on conflict with foreign powers like France and Britain. It also warned citizens to not get involved in these conflicts and by doing so they render themselves liable for punishment for aiding a power. Its purpose was to convey the United States position of neutrality. The United States policy of neutrality is very similar to Switzerland. As the United States were neutral in conflicts with world powers Switzerland were neutral in World War I and World War II.

LAD #1-Mayflower Compact and Fundamental Orders of Connecticut

What concepts are included in the Mayflower Compact?     Within the Mayflower Compact there are several crucial concep ts one being that the government is based on those governed. Another being that loyalty to England, the king and the pilgrims mother country remains strong even in the New World. Faith in God and accompanying beliefs is also a important concept included in the compact.   How does the Mayflower Compact reflect and attachment to both the "Old" and "New" worlds?        The Mayflower Compact reflects both Old and New world attachment. For example, the agreement states that these settlers will remain loyal to their mother country while at the same time forming a democratic settlement on a new continent. Also the remaining faith in God shows Old world sentiment even while creating new settlement shows the attachment to both the New and Old world. LAD #2-The Trial of John Peter Zenger

Who was Peter Zenger?    Peter Zenger was an editor and printer for the New York Weekly Journal and was the apprentice of William Bradford of the New York Gazette. He arrived in New York in 1710 as a German immigrant. Zenger printed articles that criticized the colony governor, William Crosby. Zenger was arrested for these works. What was the controversy over his charges? Talk about Hamilton's defense.    Zenger's lawyer was Andrew Hamilton. Hamilton admitted that while Zenger had taken part in the publication of the articles but that these publication were merely an attempt to bad mouth the officials unless proven otherwise. Hamliton appeal to the jury to take into account the laws and facts. This was enough to convince the jury to acquit Zenger.
